Northern Hoops keeps you up to date the latest developments of Canada’s only NBA team, the Toronto Raptors.

Can they make it 20?

The Raptors are currently the hottest team in the NBA, coming off a win against the Brooklyn Nets on Saturday which improved their current winning streak to a franchise-record 14 games.

But they are far from satisfied and are looking for more. With a team that does not have a “superstar”, can the Toronto Raptors extend their streak to 20 games? It seems like a stretch, but so was winning a championship in 2019.

This team has been facing non-stop adversity since entering the NBA in 1995. Being the only Canadian team in the league, basketball fans around the world have been counting the Raptors out. No one seems to care about some random team in Canada, which is why their winning streak is news to some.

However, if you ask majority of the population living in Toronto, the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) or in most places in Canada, they would tell you that the team is not one to take lightly. Their belief in their team is helping fuel the Raps in this current winning streak.

If you ask the players, they will tell you the same. They proved themselves last season by winning the NBA championship against the Golden State Warriors. Most critics would tell you that former Raptors forward Kawhi Leonard carried the team, or that an injury-filled Warriors roster was the only reason that they won to begin with. However, much like Fred VanVleet’s “betting on myself” mentality, the Raptors truly believe that they are the best team in the league.

Their record certainly reflects that belief, as they have the third-best record in the entire league (38-14). Many thought that when Kawhi Leonard signed with the Los Angeles Clippers the Raptors would not be able to even make the playoffs. But now it seems like they are a sure-thing. Their record is even better that Leonard’s new Clippers team.

They now face a tough road ahead of them if they wish to keep this streak going. Along the way stands superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo and the league-best Milwaukee Bucks who are also currently trying to make history by becoming the third team in NBA history to win 70 games in a season. The Raptors will not be able to extend their streak to 20 without defeating this team.

Do the Raptors have the ability to beat the league’s best team? Well, with forward Pascal Siakam heading to his first NBA All-Star game and guard Kyle Lowry heading to his sixth, they will remind fans why the Raptors are a team to be feared. With great depth on their roster with players like Marc Gasol, Norman Powell, OG Anunoby and Serge Ibaka, the team has more than enough firepower to contend with the Milwaukee Bucks.

I truly believe that this basketball team can overcome every obstacle and block out the noise to extend their winning streak to 20 games.
